WHAT IS A BLOCK?
A ‘block’ is a foundation pattern drafted to a set of measurements to fit your personal body size. We use a block as a starting point to then create any style of garment we have designed.
This is one of the most crucial bits of kit that is needed when wanting to create your own patterns. Once you have this block, and you are happy with the fit of the block, you will consistently be creating an array of designed patterns, which you know will fit you every time.
For example, with the shirt block, drafted to your own measurements, is a block that is a for classic shirt style fit.
You will then be able to use various pattern cutting techniques to make any kind of shirts you desire, blouses, classic shirts or shirt dresses.
If you prefer wearing classic fitting shirts, then this is the block for you.
The design capabilities are endless!
All with that perfect fit!
PLEASE NOTE: THERE ARE NO SEAM ALLOWANCES ON YOUR CARD BLOCKS
WHAT DO I NEED TO PROVIDE?
Please download and fill in the size chart provided, only filling in the measurements that are highlighted for your particular block, and email it back to us at: email@example.com
The download link for the size chart will be valid for 30 days. If you require another size chart, or help with taking measurements, please get in touch with us, by using the contacts page on our website.
Please be very precise with your measurements, as the blocks are drafted by hand, to the measurements you are providing. You may want someone to take measurements for you.
All measurements should be provided in centimetres. Do not round off to the nearest centimetre. If your measurement is 28.7cm, please log it as such.
WHAT WILL I RECEIVE?
The block you have requested will be drafted onto pattern card, with all markings and notches on the block.
The block will arrive rolled into a postal tube.
As the blocks are hand drafted, the delivery time is 10 days. We will communicate with you should we think any of your measurements need rechecking, and also with an expected delivery time.
THINGS TO DO WHEN YOU FIRST RECEIVE YOUR BLOCK:
When your block arrives, unroll it, you want the block to be as flat as possible, before you start using it. You can either iron it or leave flat or hung up for a few days. It is not advisable to fold the blocks.
TESTING YOUR BLOCK:
Before you start designing patterns with your block, it is advisable that you make a toile / muslin of your block, as standard, to test the fit. It may be that you need to tweak an armhole or neckline a little, depending on your desired fit.
Make up your block in fabric (calico), remembering to add seam allowances to your block. If you do not add seam allowances, it will come up a few sizes too small.
The Fashion Box will shortly be delivering online classes on pattern cutting techniques, which will be ideal for you to experiment with your blocks.
Postage and Packaging:
Postage and packaging is included for UK customers. Your block will be delivered by recorded post.
As the blocks need to be delivered rolled in a postal tube, postage and packaging is £8.50, which is included in the price.
